Album Review from the legendary "Jazz Times" magazine. "Tangerine" - The Steve Klenke Jazz Sextet The corporate stranglehold of jazz radio can often suffocate greatness from landing onto the airwaves. Ultra tight programming usually only benefits the known or commercially cold cut, which is unfortunate for the real artistry displayed by independent talents such as the Steve Klenke Jazz Sextet. The Berklee-bred Klenke plays the trumpet with a poet's ear. This isn't some mere technical exercise, covering standards by Freddie Hubbard and Johnny Mercer to show off his knockout skills. No, Klenke sinks himself into the material, whether they are the works of others or his own. He cuts deep into the emotional core of these tracks, letting his trumpet convey a myriad of feelings. The immediate showstopper is the ballad "Evening Star." Sung with sultry passion by Gayle Bisesi, "Evening Star" is awash with late-evening romanticism. Klenke's soulful trumpet literally swirls around Bisesi's enchanting delivery, taking listeners on a slow dance across the midnight skies. It achieves a level of gorgeousness that literally cleanses the world of its ugliness. Bisesi takes another stellar turn on "Breathless," her luscious voice deepened by pulsating bass. However, with or without the addition of a vocalist, Klenke is in full command. "Little Sunflower" casts a bright summer glow with Klenke's vibrant trumpet; sparkling piano and robust drumming heighten the track's exhilarating energy. The swinging title cut finds Klenke in an especially spirited mood, offering a jubilant homage to Mercer. http://jazztimes.com/community/articles/40837-album-review-tangerine-the-steve-klenke-jazz-sextet Also reviewed in All About Jazz! |
